VirusDetectiveΓäó is a DA to search through files looking for specific resources. Once found, the resource may be removed. ** NOTE: Not all viruses are stopped by removing a single resource! **
Commands are:
Automatically… - If checked, automatically scan disks as they are inserted
Cancel - Cancels the search in progress
Continue - Continues search after an offending resource is found
Credits - Shareware/copyright info
Delete - Delete matched file
Disk/Folder Scan - Searches the selected directory and all subdirectories
Help - This dialog
Modify Search… - Allows you to modify the resources searched for (has own help)
Option Configuration - Allows you to configure various options (has own help)
Remove - Remove matched resource
Scan one file - Search a single file
Show Info - Displays various pieces of information when a resource/file is matched
Skip to Next File - Continues search with the next file skipping remaining search strings
Skip to Next Search - Continues search with next search string skipping current string
In the Disk/Folder Scan dialog: ΓÇ£Check Entire DiskΓÇ¥ checks the entire disk; ΓÇ£Check This FldrΓÇ¥ checks the current folder (whose name appears in the box directly below this button) & contents; ΓÇ£Check FldrΓÇ¥ checks the selected (highlighted) folder & contents; ΓÇ£Open FldrΓÇ¥ opens the selected (highlighted) folder.
The resources VirusDetectiveΓäó searches for can be adjusted. This is done by adding search strings of the appropriate form to VirusDetectiveΓäó. Click the Modify Search Strings button for details.
You can also create a text-only log file containing all the files checked by VirusDetectiveΓäó or just those found to have matched resources. Click the Option Configuration button for details.
Cmd-W can be used to close VirusDetectiveΓäó.
If ΓÇ£Automatically scan new disksΓÇ¥ is checked then VirusDetectiveΓäó will check about once a second to see if any new disks have been inserted. If a new disk is detected it will proceed to do a full disk scan.
What happens after a successful scan or after a match is found depends upon whether or not VirusDetectiveΓäó is the topmost window.
If VirusDetectiveΓäó is the topmost window:
No matched resources - Disk is unmounted and ejected
Matched resources - Pauses for user action, disk is left mounted when finished
If VirusDetectiveΓäó is NOT the topmost window:
No matched resources - Disk is left mounted
Matched resources - Finishes scan. When finished disk is left mounted and user is alerted
These behaviors allow you to either quickly scan an entire library of disks or leave VirusDetectiveΓäó lurking in the background to check new disks as they are inserted.
When VirusDetectiveΓäó is in the background, and it detects a new disk, the cursor will change into a rotating beach ball and all other processing will stop until the scan is completed.
If VirusDetectiveΓäó starts a scan when it is the topmost window, and it is then placed in the background, scanning will halt until VirusDetectiveΓäó is brought topmost again.
NOTE: When running in background what search strings matched will be lost unless you keep a written log (see ΓÇ£Option ConfigurationΓÇ¥).
During scanning the ΓÇ£Checking:ΓÇ¥ area will display the name of the fie being scanned. Should it match any search string then the full path to that file (or just the tail end if too long for the display) will be displayed and the ΓÇ£Matched:ΓÇ¥ area will contain the search string that matched.
After scanning the ΓÇ£Checking:ΓÇ¥ area will display the number of matched files and the ΓÇ£Matched:ΓÇ¥ area will display the total number of files scanned.
